Preconstruction and Estimating Leader/Chief Estimator

Job Description:

·        Lead by example to promote a robust and transparent safety culture.

·        Follow and support safety regulations and company policies, fostering a culture of workplace safety.

·        Lead and manage all aspects of bid strategy and coordination for public and private sector bids and estimates.

·        Develop clear and accurate scope documents for Design Build projects.  

·        Review project specs and scopes and ask questions where clarification is needed, both internally and externally.

·        Actively manage and track bid metrics and values for accurate pipeline management and financial forecasting.

·        Work in conjunction with Operations to ensure that detailed General Conditions/Requirement (GC/GRs) estimates are prepared, and review with others, as needed.

·        Lead and manage all aspects of bid strategy and coordination for public and private sector bids and estimates.

·        Responsible for the value engineering process during bidding, preconstruction and design build projects.

·        Manage the workloads and development of Estimating and Preconstruction staff.  

·        Ensure strict adherence to Safety, Quality, Ethics and Compliance requirements at all times.

·        Ensure the team secures at least 3 bids per scope on all trades/divisions, including soliciting new trade partners and subcontractors.

·        Review drawings, specifications and all other construction documents. Make senior management aware of design-related problems, completeness of documents and other potential risks.

·        Coordinate and manage material pricing, including potential alternates and efficiencies.

·        Review project specs and scopes and ask questions where clarification is needed, both internally and externally.

·        Actively manage and track bid metrics and values for accurate pipeline management and financial forecasting.

·        Analyze and assemble cost data, unit prices, historical costs, and information that can be developed and used as a database for future conceptual estimates.

·        Schedule time with Superintendents and subject matter experts, both internal and external, to understand constructability and resource capabilities, including: approach, hours/timing, equipment, materials, tools, and manpower.

·        Visit job sites and explore how estimating can positively impact construction delivery including costs, phasing, resource planning and scope auditing.

·        Highlight risks in project including scope coverage deficiencies, subcontract, schedule and resource exposure.  

·        Perform takeoffs and support documents to ensure accurate estimates and bids.

·        Partner with business development to attend networking functions and expand partnerships with peers, trade partners and client partners.

·        Send out, track and follow up on bid invites and ensure bid coverage by trade and scope.  

·        Be an active participant and contributor, including potentially leading team coordination, for bid day activities and overall support, as needed.

·        Assist all team members, including project managers, in buyout and repricing exercises, as needed.

·        Provide contact list and all support documentation (including emails, notes, and estimates) to Estimator I for inclusion in the Estimating Handoff Book for Estimating and preconstruction transition.

·        Seek out opportunities to become knowledgeable and proficient on all software and platforms including Bluebeam, MS 365 Suite, Trimble and any other project software required by J.H. Hassinger Inc. or our clients/partners.  

·        Manage accurate bid board and track all estimating opportunities.

·        Actively build a network of subcontractors and professional peers at other architecture, engineering and construction firms to increase professional influence, impact and knowledge.

·        Serve as a positive Ambassador at outside partner lunch and learns, partner and subcontractor events.

·        Send out bid invites and track who will be responding to ensure scope coverage.  

·        Actively outreach and contact new subcontractors and add to bid lists for current and future opportunities.

·        Apply for target funds in support on union projects.

·        Seek out opportunities to become knowledgeable and proficient on all software and platforms including Bluebeam, MS 365 Suite, Trimble and any other project software required by J.H. Hassinger Inc. or our clients/partners.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree, vocational training, certification from an accreditation organization, or combination of schooling and relevant work experience
• Valid Driver's License and ability to meet commercial insurance requirements, CDL preferred
• Advanced knowledge of Excel preferred.
• 10+ years of estimating for reputable general contractors
• 5+ years estimating public/hard bid work    
• Ability to travel throughout Wisconsin, as needed.  
• Ability to lift, carry or hold 26-50 lbs. more than 10 times per day
• Ability to perform low posture, crouching, crawling, kneeling or squatting activities
• Ability to work occasional weekends, evenings and holidays  
• Ability to clearly communicate with others and convey information effectively
• Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
• Ability to manage own time and the time of others
• Ability to motivate, develop and direct people
• Knowledge of commercial construction materials, means and methods, and equipment preferred
• Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, and coordination of people and resources preferred
